September 28, 2007 | The Jena 6

Jena, Louisiana is a small town that has recently been in the news for the "Jena 6," a group of six African-American teenagers who were arrested and charged for the beating of a Caucasian student. A rally was held on September 20, 2007, the date on which Mychal Bell's sentence was to be given. The rally brought over 10,000 protestors to the town of Jena, including many prominent figures within the black community. Word of the rally was spread largely through the online community, specifically on Facebook. Three days later, an online petition gathered over 400,000 signatures in the hopes of having the U.S. Justice Department intervene to determine whether or not the civil rights of the Jena 6 were violated.




September 21, 2007 | O.J. Simpson

On September 14, 2007, Orenthal James Simpson was thrust back into the spotlight upon his arrest at the Palace Station Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Simpson was charged with multiple felonies, including use of a deadly weapon, kidnapping, criminal conspiracy, assault, and robbery, as he attempted to regain control over memorabilia that Simpson claims was stolen from him.

September 15, 2007 | Troop Surge: Petraeus Report

In January 2007, President Bush announced plans for a troop surge in Iraq. He announced that 20,000 additional troops would be deployed in order to boost the US presence to combat insurgent attacks and prevent Iraq from becoming "a hot bed for terrorism." Then, on May 8, 2007, the Pentagon announced that 35,000 additional troops would be deployed in order to support Bush's surge throughout the year.

September 7, 2007| Senator Larry Craig

On June 11, 2007, Senator Larry Craig was charged with lewd conduct for allegedly soliciting gay sex from an undercover police officer in the bathroom at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. The officer provided proof of Craig's intent by explaining that Craig peered into his stall for several minutes, tapped his right foot against the officer's foot, and then slid his hand underneath the stall—all of which are reported to be signs for "cruising" at the airport.

August 31, 2007 | Gonzales Resignation

For months, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has been the center of controversy surrounding the firing of 8 U.S. Attorneys under suspicious pretences. On numerous occasions Gonzales has been questioned by the Senate Judiciary Committee as to his knowledge of and participation in the firings, to which he often replied that he "could not recall" the information asked or that he "did not know." Due to his frequent pleas of ignorance, several Democratic and Republican politicians have called for his resignation.

Agust 24, 2007 | Wikipedia

On August 14, 2007, news broke on Wired.com that Virgil Griffith, a computer science graduate student at the California Institute of Technology, created an application called WikiScanner that tracks edits made to Wikipedia articles. Griffith's tool exposed the IP addresses of employees at several corporations who were making edits to not only their own company's page(s), but also those of competitors. Just a few of the corporations listed include Exxon Mobil, Apple, Microsoft, and Wal-Mart.

On August 13, 2007, Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove announced via a Wall Street Journal article that he would be resigning from office, effective August 31, 2007.
