Alberto Gonzales' Resignation

For months, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has been the center of controversy surrounding the firing of 8 U.S. Attorneys under suspicious pretences. On numerous occasions Gonzales has been questioned by the Senate Judiciary Committee as to his knowledge of and participation in the firings, to which he often replied that he "could not recall" the information asked or that he "did not know." Due to his frequent pleas of ignorance, several Democratic and Republican politicians have called for his resignation.

On August 26, 2007, Gonzales submitted a letter to President Bush announcing that he would be stepping down as Attorney General, effective September 17, 2007. Media has stated that the letter did not offer specific reasons as to why Gonzales is resigning, but in a public statement made by President Bush the following day, Bush proclaimed that Gonzales' "good name has been dragged through the mud for political reasons."
