The Jena 6
Jena, Louisiana is a small town of just under 3,000 inhabitants, located in the central part of the state. The town has recently been in the news for the "Jena 6," a group of six African-American teenagers who were arrested and charged for the beating of a Caucasian student. There were several events that took place leading up to the beating, and multiple variations of the stories have been covered in the press.
The turbulent history between the Jena 6 and multiple Caucasian students has brought to light several issues regarding racism within the town of Jena, LA. A rally was held on September 20, 2007, the date on which Mychal Bell's sentence was to be given. The rally brought over 10,000 protestors to the town of Jena, including many prominent figures within the black community. Word of the rally was spread largely through the online community, specifically on Facebook. Three days later, an online petition gathered over 400,000 signatures in the hopes of having the U.S. Justice Department intervene to determine whether or not the civil rights of the Jena 6 were violated.

Comprising just over half of all comments made about the Jena 6 in the blogosphere, Gen Y blogged the most this week, at 51%. Boomers made up 34% of the discussion for the week, and Gen X spoke about the Jena 6 just 15% of the time.
The age breakdown for the Jena 6 topic closely mirrored that of the breakdown in the blogosphere overall for the week for Gen Y, at 51% to 57%, respectively. Boomers spoke more frequently about the Jena 6 as compared to other topics of discussion; Gen X did the exact opposite, as they blogged less about Jena 6 and more about other topics this week.
