March 23 , 2007 | First International Conference on Weblogs and Social-Media Analysis Taking Place This Month

Leading CGM companies Umbria and Nielsen BuzzMetrics to co-sponsor event at the University of Colorado

Boulder, Col. (March 23, 2007) – Nielsen BuzzMetrics and Umbria, two consumer-generated media measurement firms, today announced that they are co-sponsoring the first annual International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media Analysis (ICWSM - http://icwsm.org) to be held March 26-28 in Boulder, Colo., in the United States.

Both companies will contribute research to the symposium, which will advance discussion and innovation in the social-media field. The conference agenda includes dozens of presentations and papers from top academics and industry scientists from around the world. Topics will include social-network analysis, sentiment mining and demographic analysis, among others.

The conference will also feature special addresses from social-media luminaries Evan Williams, Danah Boyd and Andrew Tomkins. An afternoon of tutorials on blog search and blog spam will precede the conference.

"Everyone has a voice in today's web, whether it´s writing a travel blog, sharing family photos on Flickr, getting discovered as the latest hot talent on YouTube, or debating the relative merits of one brand of diapers over another on a message board," said Sundar Kadayam, Chief Technology Officer, Nielsen BuzzMetrics. "This new conference brings together researchers who work to uncover both the trends hidden in the mass of voices as well as the global communities that arise from highly individual and personal interactions."

"Social media is an exploding phenomenon," said Dr. Nicolas Nicolov, Chief Scientist at Umbria. "Companies that can effectively mine consumer generated content — in all its messy, ungrammatical, unstructured forms — can transform the way they interact with their customers. But, the exercise isn't trivial. It will require a multitude of disciplines, from text mining and pattern recognition to new graph techniques for social network analysis and more. This conference is a forum to gather the world's best minds in all these fields to move the industry forward."

The conference is the latest in a sequence of meetings on social media research sponsored by Nielsen BuzzMetrics and Umbria.

Other sponsors include: Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft LiveLabs, NEC, Klotsu, Sphere, Attentio, the University of Pennsylvania and UMBC. The conference is affiliated with IW3C2 and AAAI.
